The Falcons narrowly escaped with a win tonight at Burroughs, by a final of 4-3.

It looked like it was going to be an open game tonight after the 1st inning, with both teams scoring in their half of the inning, and Burroughs taking the lead 2-1.  Both pitchers settled down after that and the Falcons found themselves down by the same score enterring the 7th inning.

With the Falcons needing at least one run in the inning, David Melendez led off with a hit-by-pitch.  After an out, Melendez advanced to 2nd base, and then was replaced by pinch runner, Mason Allen.  Jamie Bleveans then moved Allen to 3rd base with a ground ball out to the 2nd baseman.  Isaac Sung was then hit by a pitch, which brought to the plate Will Grimm.  Sung eventually stole 2nd base during Grimm's at bat, which put the tying and leading run on 2nd and 3rd.  Grimm got himself into a hole at the plate and the Falcons were down to their last strike of the game.  With a 1-2 count and the maximum amount of pressure on Grimm, he delivered a double to left field, that was just out of the reach of the diving left fielder.  Allen and Sung scored easily and the Falcons were in the lead again for the first time since the top of the 1st.  After a walk to Vincent Parrott, Brian Ghattas came up and plated Grimm on an infield single, and pushed the lead to two runs for the Falcons.

The game was well in hand for the Falcons now, or so they thought, but Burroughs had something to say about that.  Their first two batters doubled in the bottom of the 7th and the score was now 4-3, no outs, and the tying runner at 2nd base.  Up to this point Will Grimm had gone the distance on the mound, but it was time for Chad Ruf to enter the game to try and secure the victory.  Fortunately, that is exactly what he was able to do. Ruf struck out the first batter he faced, and then induced two routine flyballs to Sung in center field.

The Falcons definitely dodged a bullet tonight and kept themselves right in the thick of the league championship, with three more games to go.

See you at the next game!
